Dutch translations in old days
The first known Dutch translation dates back to the 12th century when the novel “Reynaert- the fox” was translated into English, by William Caxton, and circulated among English readers that circle in the west. This book is about the misdeeds of the ruler who was said to act like a fox ruling a kingdom of animals. The writer criticized the government and society of the time and wanted readers from different nations know about this Kingdom.

During the 16th century there were several writers, such as Dirck Coornhert, who attempted to create Dutch literature, then carried out Dutch translations of Latin, Greek, English, and German literature, as well as literature in other languages, to make it available to Dutch readers.

Another important example was the Dutch translation of the New Testament of the Bible in the 17th century. A religion scholar, Staten, was appointed by the Synod of Dordrecht to complete the translation of the Bible so that it could be understood by the majority of the Dutch population, considering at that time there was no Standard dialect of the Dutch language. This Dutch translation is of extreme importance in the history of the Dutch language because it was considered to be the beginning of the movement for Standardization of the Dutch language.
